The Department of World Languages welcomes you to Tom C. Clark H.S. Students are strongly encouraged to study Latin, French, German, or Spanish. Four-year selective universities often require a minimum of three years of the same language study at the high school level. Additionally, studying multiple years of the same language will demonstrate a determination these universities are often searching for during their admission process.
To attain the greatest benefit of the World Language program we offer classes in French, German, Latin, and Spanish. As advanced, AP, and Dual Credit are options, GPA enhancement will be given for those students enrolled in advanced or AP level world language courses.
The study of World Languages, whether classical or modern, is an essential component in becoming a well-rounded learner in the 21st century. The study of a language other than English will heighten students' global awareness and will help them develop an appreciation of their immediate surroundings and beyond. Armed with the benefits of their adventures in the World Language programs here at Clark, students will become better human beings and will be able to make positive contributions to our society.

Latin

Latin is the base of all modern Romance languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, etc.) and a familiarity with Latin will help the students understand these languages. Reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition (both in Latin and in English), and interaction with the cultures of the Romans and the Greeks (gladiatorial combats, mythology, etc.) are the foci of the Latin curriculum. Additionally, Latin will help with developing better cognitive and problem-solving skills and improving vocabulary, which can lead to better scores on standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, etc. Latin is also important in careers in the medical and legal fields. Finally, LATIN IS FUN AND UNIQUE! Colleges and universities often look for things that will set a candidate apart, and what better way to stand out than to show Latin on the transcript and also the awards that can be earned by being part of Latin!
